You don’t need every pick to win. A few bets can lose, and you can still get some money back.

Let’s see how each one works and when it’s actually worth using.

What Are System Bet Types?

Have you ever had an accumulator where just one bet lost and the whole ticket was gone?

That’s exactly the problem system bet types try to solve.

Instead of putting all your picks into one all-or-nothing bet, a system bet breaks them into smaller combinations. That way, one or even two picks can lose, and you may still get some money back.

Sounds good, right?

Well, there’s a catch, and it’s the reason system bets aren’t always the best choice.

Let’s see how they work.

Yankee Bet

A Yankee bet is one of the most popular system bet types. It uses 4 picks and turns them into 11 different bets:

6 doubles

4 trebles

1 four-fold accumulator

That means you don’t need all four picks to win.

How many picks need to win?

At least 2. If only one pick wins, the Yankee loses because there aren’t enough winning bets to make a double.

If two, three or all four picks win, you get a return. The more picks that win, the bigger the payout becomes.

Let’s see how that works with the same four football picks.

Yankee Bet Example

Let’s use the same four football picks:

Liverpool to beat Everton @1.80

Barcelona to beat Sevilla @1.70

Bayern Munich to beat Augsburg @1.65

Inter to beat Torino @1.75

Now let’s say you bet €1 on each bet. A Yankee makes 11 bets, so you’ll bet €11 in total. For the sake of the example the results are these:

Liverpool to beat Everton – Won

Barcelona to beat Sevilla – Won

Bayern Munich to beat Augsburg – Lost

Inter to beat Torino – Lost

Only one double wins:

Liverpool + Barcelona @3.06

Everything else loses. Your total return is €3.06.

So even though you picked 2 winners out of 4, you still lose money because you staked €11.

Now imagine the same four picks as an accumulator. The accumulator would have lost because not all four picks won.

That’s the difference. A Yankee gives you another way to play. You don’t need every pick to win, but you do pay more because you’re placing 11 bets, not just one.

Lucky 15

You already know how a Yankee works. Now let’s change just one thing.

A Lucky 15 starts with the same 4 picks, but this time the bookmaker also adds 4 single bets. So your four picks become:

4 singles

6 doubles

4 trebles

1 four-fold accumulator

That’s the only difference. With a Yankee, one winner isn’t enough.

With a Lucky 15, one winner can already give you some money back because you also have that pick as a single bet.

Is it always the better choice? Not really. Those extra four singles also mean you’re paying for 15 bets instead of 11.

Like a Yankee, a Lucky 15 is usually made with picks from different matches. If all your picks are from the same match, you’re looking for a Bet Builder instead.

Heinz

Heinz

A Yankee uses 4 picks. So what happens if you’ve found 6 picks you really want to back? In that case, you would have had a Heinz.

The bookmaker takes your six picks and makes:

15 doubles

20 trebles

15 four-fold accumulators

6 five-fold accumulators

1 six-fold accumulator

If you add them together, you will get 57 bets. If you bet €1 on each bet, you’ll spend €57 before the first match even starts.

That’s why a Heinz isn’t something you play every weekend. It only makes sense if you really want to back all six picks. If you’re adding a fifth or sixth pick just to build a Heinz, it’s probably better to stop.

Just like a Yankee and a Lucky 15, a Heinz is usually made with picks from different matches, not several picks from the same match.

Goliath

From the 6 picks you have with a Heinz, the Goliath takes it even further with 8 picks.

The bookmaker uses those eight picks to make every possible:

double

treble

four-fold accumulator

five-fold accumulator

six-fold accumulator

seven-fold accumulator

eight-fold accumulator

When you add them all together, you get 247 bets. Now you get, why the bet is called a Goliath! Bet €1 on each bet and you’ll spend €247 before the first match even starts.

That’s a lot of money, and it is best to invest them only when you’ve found 8 picks you really want to back and you don’t want one losing pick to ruin everything.

Just like the other bet types in this guide, a Goliath is usually made with picks from different matches or events, not from the same match.

Common Bet Combinations

Accumulator Bet

You’ve already seen what happens when you go from a single to a double, and from a double to a treble. Add one more bet, and you’ve got an accumulator bet.

The idea stays exactly the same. Every new bet increases the possible payout, but it also gives you one more way to lose the whole bet.

There’s no need for another example. By now, you’ve got the idea.

When is an accumulator worth the risk?

An accumulator is worth the risk when every bet has a reason to be there. The bigger payout should be a bonus, not the reason for adding another match.

Parlay Bet

If you’ve heard the term parlay bet, don’t let it confuse you. A parlay is simply another name for an accumulator bet. The only real difference is where the term is used.

In the United States and Canada, bettors usually say parlay. In the UK and many other countries, the same bet is known as an accumulator or simply an acca.

The rules don’t change. You combine multiple bets into one, every bet has to win, and adding more bets increases both the possible payout and the risk.

Bet Builder

A Bet Builder lets you put together different bets from the same match. Instead of placing three separate bets, you put them all into one Bet Builder. For example:

Liverpool to win

Mohamed Salah to score anytime

Over 2.5 Goals

Isn’t that just a treble?

Not really.

With a treble, you put separate bets into one bet. They usually come from different matches because bookmakers don’t normally let you put more than one bet from the same match into a treble.

Why?

Because the bets can help each other.

For example, if Liverpool wins 5-0, Over 2.5 Goals is more likely to win. Mohamed Salah to score anytime is also more likely to win. One bet can make the other bets easier to win.

So why do bookmakers allow a Bet Builder?

Because they know the bets are connected.

Instead of treating them like a normal treble, they give you new odds for the whole Bet Builder.

In most cases, those odds will be lower than if you simply multiplied all the odds together. That’s because the bookmaker knows one bet can make the others more likely to win.

The easiest way to remember it? One match is a Bet Builder. Different matches is a treble.

When is a Bet Builder worth the risk?

A Bet Builder is worth it when you already have a good idea of how you think the match will go.

Maybe you think Liverpool will win, there will be plenty of goals and Salah will score. Instead of placing three separate bets, you can put them into one Bet Builder.

The important thing is that every pick should fit the way you see the game. If you’re only adding another pick because you want bigger odds, it’s probably better to leave it out.

The best Bet Builders are built around one clear idea of how the match will go, with every pick fitting that idea.

I’ve Got 4 Picks. Should I Play a Yankee or a Lucky 15?

Let’s say these are your four picks:

Liverpool to beat Everton @1.80

Barcelona to beat Sevilla @1.70

Bayern Munich to beat Augsburg @1.65

Inter to beat Torino @1.75

You like all four. Now you have a choice. Do you play a Yankee or pay a little more for a Lucky 15?

Let’s keep it simple and bet €1 on each bet. A Yankee costs €11. A Lucky 15 costs €15. Let’s say this is how the day ends:

Liverpool wins.

Barcelona loses.

Bayern loses.

Inter loses.

With the Yankee, you get nothing back. One winner isn’t enough because there isn’t a winning double.

With the Lucky 15, Liverpool is also a single bet, so you get some money back. Now let’s change one thing.

Liverpool wins.

Barcelona wins.

Bayern loses.

Inter loses.

The Yankee now has one winning double. The Lucky 15 has the same winning double, plus two winning singles.

This is where the extra €4 starts to make sense. The Lucky 15 costs more, but this time those extra bets paid off. If all four picks had won, both bets would have paid well.

So which one would you have been happier to place before the first match kicked off?

I Placed a Yankee. Two Picks Won. Now What?

Your four picks finished like this:

Liverpool to beat Everton @1.80 — Won

Barcelona to beat Sevilla @1.70 — Won

Bayern Munich to beat Augsburg @1.65 — Lost

Inter to beat Torino @1.75 — Lost

You open your account and see some money back.

How did that happen with only two winners?

Your Yankee has 11 separate bets. Only one of them won:

Liverpool + Barcelona @3.06

All the other doubles lost. All four trebles lost. The four-fold also lost. If you bet €1 on each bet, your total stake was €11 and you got €3.06 back.

Now change only one result: Bayern also wins. Your Yankee now has:

3 winning doubles

1 winning treble

With €1 on each bet, those winning bets pay:

Liverpool + Barcelona: €3.06

Liverpool + Bayern: €2.97

Barcelona + Bayern: €2.81

Liverpool + Barcelona + Bayern: €5.05

Your total payout is €13.89.

One extra winner took the payout from €3.06 to €13.89, because it gave you four winning bets instead of one.

I’ve Got €50. Should I Spend It on a Yankee, Lucky 15 or Heinz?

Let’s say you’ve got €50 for this weekend. You already know:

A Yankee needs 11 bets.

A Lucky 15 needs 15 bets.

So how much can you really stake? With €50, you could bet:

€4.54 on each Yankee bet.

€3.33 on each Lucky 15 bet.

Now let’s say you’ve also found another 2 picks. You could build a Heinz, but now you’re paying for 57 bets.

With the same €50, your stake drops to €0.87 on each bet. Nothing is wrong with that. The question is whether that’s what you wanted from the start.

If your best four picks were Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern and Inter, would you rather back those four with €4.54 on each bet?

Or would you rather add two more picks just so you can play a Heinz with €0.87 on each bet? There isn’t one right answer.

The important thing is that you choose the bet type because it fits your picks and your budget, not because it has a bigger name.

HÄUFIGE FRAGEN

Can I use picks from the same match in a system bet?

Usually no. System bets are normally made with picks from different matches or events. If all your picks are from the same match, you usually need a Bet Builder instead.

Can I mix football, tennis and basketball in the same system bet?

In many cases, yes. If your bookmaker allows it, you can use picks from different sports in the same system bet.

What happens if one match is cancelled?

In most cases, the cancelled match is taken out and the rest of your system bet carries on. The exact rules can be different from one bookmaker to another.

Do all bookmakers offer the same system bets?

No. Some bookmakers offer more system bets than others. For example, one bookmaker may offer a Heinz or Goliath, while another may only offer a Yankee and a Lucky 15.

Can I cash out a system bet before all the matches finish?

Sometimes, yes. Many bookmakers offer Cash Out, but not all of them do. It also depends on which matches have already finished.

Can I make my own system bet, or do I have to choose a Yankee, Lucky 15 or Heinz?

That depends on your bookmaker. Some let you choose your own combinations. Others only let you pick from ready-made system bets like a Yankee, Lucky 15 or Heinz.

What’s the biggest mistake when placing a system bet?

Adding extra picks just to make a bigger system bet. Find the picks first. Then choose the bet type that fits them best.

In a Nutshell

System bet types give you another way to play when you’ve found several picks you want to back. They won’t turn bad picks into good ones, and they won’t guarantee a profit. What they can do is give you more cover than an accumulator when some picks lose. Before placing a Yankee, Lucky 15, Heinz or Goliath, make sure you’re choosing the bet type because it fits your picks and your budget, not just because the payout looks bigger.

Please bet responsibly.
